The Little Creek Amphibious Naval base, now known as the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek / Fort Story is located north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and extends to Norfolk’s East Beach. The base has over ten thousand military personnel and close to two thousand civilians. Little Creek has traditionally been the largest and fastest growing operating base for Amphibious Forces in the world. While its historical and widely publicized mission has been to provide support services to over fifteen thousand personnel of the twenty-seven home-ported ships and seventy-eight resident supported activities, its role as home for most of the Atlantic Fleet’s Naval Special Warfare Community, SEAL teams Two, Four, Eight, and Ten make it one of our nation’s most valued bases.
SEALS were the Navy’s strongest swimmers who were known as Frogmen. They disarmed Japanese mines in the South Pacific during WWII and grew into Sea Air Land Commandos during Vietnam. Through the Navy’s ability to insert them anywhere on the globe, have proudly become the finest warriors on Earth. Like the San Diego community, Virginia Beach and Norfolk locals are very protective and proud of their SEALS and SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen) brothers. Not only are they our Freedom’s guardians, they are our neighbors and friends.
The base began as a dynamic training ground for World War II, it trained ship’s crews for landing ship medium, landing craft infantry, landing craft utility, landing craft mechanized, and landing craft for vehicle and personnel. During World War II over 200,000 naval personnel, 160,000 Army and Marine Corps personnel trained at Little Creek. After long hours of training, many service men and women performed extra duties on their own initiative which resulted in better living conditions on the base. In 2009 Little Creek finished its two-year merger with Army’s Fort Story, officially naming the merged bases “Joint Expeditionary Base.” Today, the base has since grown and developed into a strategic expeditionary oriented command and continues to evolve to meet the needs of the Global War on Terrorism.
